The ancient discipline of rhetoric has had substantial influence on various theories of psychoanalysis and vice versa, especially as the study of speech and its relationship to desire, trauma, and affect is central to both. The unconscious, as a web of interconnected symbols, has been described as either a “grammar” or a “rhetoric,” but the distinction between these concepts and the affordances of each can be unclear. This talk explores how some rhetorical concepts have already been taken up by psychoanalysts and suggests new opportunities for contemporary rhetorical theory to make contributions to our understanding of metaphor, metonymy, propriety, and other tropes and figures in speech.

Learning Objectives:

Following this presentation, participants will be able to:

1) Define the field of rhetoric and identify at least one area of overlap between rhetoric and psychoanalysis as fields of inquiry.

2) Name several rhetorical tropes and figures and describe their use in speech.
