Though adaptation is a concept internal to all psychoanalytic theory and practice, perhaps no one in the psychoanalytic tradition emphasized adaptation more than Robert Langs. This presentation compares the clinical concepts of “adaptation” in Robert Langs and Carl Jung, examining their central similarities and differences as well as deriving clinical implications from this comparison.
Learning Objectives:
1. Analyze the clinical significance of adaptation for psychoanalytic clinical theory and practice.
2. Compare the different concepts of adaptation in Langs and Jung and how each might supplement the other.
3. Develop clinical principles based on the comparison of Lange and Jung’s concepts of adaptation.
About Our Presenter:
John R. White, PhD, LPC is a practicing Jungian psychoanalyst in Pittsburgh PA and Coordinator of the C. G. Jung Institute Analyst Training Program of Pittsburgh. He has more than forty publications in both philosophy and psychoanalysis. His book Adaptation and Psychotherapy. Langs and Analytical Psychology, was published by Rowman & Littlefield, 2023.
