ETHICS:  Presenting & Writing About Clinical Material

A Virtual Presentation Via Zoom
by Sharon Leak, Ph.D., Pittsburgh Psychoanalytic Center Faculty

THURSDAY, APRIL 3, 2025
6:00 - 9:00 PM EST

3 CEs (Fulfills Ethics Requirement in PA)
Cost:  $45

Using a series of clinical vignettes, this seminar will explore ethical issues that we, as clinicians, face as we respect our patients’ trust, unique life stories, and the need to maintain confidentiality while learning from them and each other.

We will discuss primary strategies for resolving the potential conflict that arises between the need to protect a patient’s trust and privacy while addressing the educational and scientific needs of the field. Recognizing that there is no single “solution” to this ethical dilemma, we will consider the nuances of patient consent, Gabbard’s “thick disguise,” and use of clinical case composites. Other strategies and considerations that inform the ethics of presenting and writing about clinical material will be interwoven into the discussion.

Learning Objectives:

Participants will identify the 5 primary strategies for ethical presentation and writing about clinical material—and the pros and cons of each.

Participants will identify patient characteristics and circumstances that argue for a higher level of caution in sharing clinical material in any form.

Participants will identify how material can be disguised while maintaining its authenticity.

Participants will identify at least three additional “smaller” ways to enhance confidentiality provided by any of the 5 primary strategies.
